This Affiliate ID is useful to guarantee that if someone go to the Affiliate Merchant website & buy something, Affiliate Merchant will get the data from the Affiliate ID about who is the Affiliate Marketer that help the Affiliate Merchant to sell the product.
I will give the example of how Affiliate Link works. For example : We find the online product that We want to sell. Then We notice that the website offers an affiliate program. After We examine the condition, We know that They are willing to give Us 50% for every sales that We produce.

After We agree with the agreement, We will receive the Affiliate Link from Affiliate Merchant. Our duty is to promote the link. We can place the Affiliate Link to our Email Signature & display it on our Website or Blog with the hope that people who see the link from our Email Signature, Website, or Blog will be interested to click it.
When the people who click the link BUY something from the Affiliate Merchant, then We are paid. That`s the real challenge of this kind of Affiliate Marketing. If the click doesn`t produce the sales, then We won`t be paid.
The Affiliate Marketer do their job with send the product or service that people buy from our Affiliate Link. And We help them promote the Affiliate Link.
